Happy Equinox! We're ringing in spring with bookma Happy Equinox! We're ringing in spring with bookmatched bars of Solstice, a new art soap with twin flame imagery, forced glycerin rivers and dots as a design element, and a richly layered scent that’s at once earthy and bright.

Scent: Soft pomelo and Bristol-grown lemongrass on a cozy bed of dark patchouli and clove

Design/Color: Twin Flame swirl with Moroccan clay, NYS-grown madder root, our calendula petals and fresh turmeric

Nerd out with me here: The saponification process naturally produces both heat and glycerin. The glycerin typically remains invisibly distributed throughout the block or slab of soap. If the nascent batch of soap reaches a high enough temperature during saponification, some of the glycerin will separate and form thin, solid, translucent trails, or glycerin rivers, that remain translucent in the soap as it cures. If temperatures are manipulated correctly, tiny dots of glycerin will also form on the exposed surface of the soap. The second and third photos show the rivers and dots.

AND! If the temperature of a newly poured soap rises too high, the center of the block will become a soap volcano and create a violent explosion of unsaponified caustic batter. Thankfully, this didn't happen. Phew.

Solstice will be ready in late May, timed to welcome summer. ☀️ Happy Spring, y'all.

🧼 Art Soap Updates 🧼 Slides 1-5: Only four b 🧼 Art Soap Updates 🧼
Slides 1-5: Only four bars remain of the OHL Kids Art Soaps! This series was created one year ago as a humble fundraiser for my family after receiving many gentle requests for ways to help. I enabled "pay what you want" on this listing. All proceeds beyond the minimum price go toward healthcare expenses and the ability to build memories as a family by allowing a little time off. Tremendous thanks to all who shared or contributed to the campaign. 🙏🏽❤️

Slides 6-10: Throwback! I recently recovered several First Series art soap bars in perfect condition and would like to share them at a discount. This collaboration features the work of artist friends in Rochester and Ithaca. At least 25% of proceeds will go to The Xerxes Society, Rainforest Trust and The Trevor Project, respectively.

Over the years, we—as in you, me, our crew—have raised thousands of dollars for charities, food banks, justice organizations and community members in need through art soaps and other fundraising efforts. Thank you always for choosing to make a difference. 💛✨
Y'all it's SO GOOD to be back in the shop! How fit Y'all it's SO GOOD to be back in the shop! How fitting to start the new making year, however belated, by hand dipping beeswax and bayberry candles?

When we lived on the shore, the kids and I began an annual tradition of making tiny candles from foraged Northern Bayberries. (Morella pensylvanica, formerly known as Myrica pensylvanica.) I'd stay up far too late simmering pails of the tiny gray fruit, painstakingly skimming the fragrant wax as it rendered and floated to the surface. We'd dip hemp string into a mason jar of the wax to create small candles to be burned on New Year's Eve.

Several incredibly kind, generous friends picked and mailed gallons of New England bayberries to me last fall. Rendering, filtering and dipping bayberry again brings back the sweetest memories. Tradition dictates burning an entire bayberry candle at once, a sentimental but considerable commitment with a ten inch candle (ten hours). These are intentionally short and sturdy for a more reasonable four to five hour burn. 😅 I am so close to sharing some of these with you. Soon, soon. 🙏🏽

This is the first batch—of anything—that I've been able to make for OHL in three months. More items are on deck including new and continued collaborations with friends at @komorebi_kombucha, @fruition_seeds, @naplesbrewco, @hollerhorndistilling and a few more TBA.

Thank you all for bearing with me. I am so happy to be back and hope you're doing well. 💜

P.S. Spring is almost here. 🌱☀️✨
Happy February! It's wonderful and admittedly a bi Happy February! It's wonderful and admittedly a bit surreal to welcome a new year. We've had a good, healing break and I feel energy returning with the longer days. We're starting successions of seeds, watching the maple trees for signs of running sap, testing new items and soaking up the relative rest of this odd, inconsistent winter weather.

I feel profoundly lucky to be here for another growing season. Thank you so much for your support, kindness and patience during the recent challenging months. 💛✨

Hey! Bear with me. These apps really aren't made f Hey! Bear with me. These apps really aren't made for long thoughts. Here are two highlights; please swipe or click to comments for the full post. 💜

"Along the way I’ve learned that some people are looking for solutions to their skincare problems, and some people want inventive niche items, but many more seek well-made products they need to buy anyway made by people they actually want to support. We can all find soap, deodorant, lotion and anything else, anywhere. The people and causes behind them often determine whether we purchase or pass."

"Today is National Entrepreneurs’ Day. While I look forward to a time when no one needs to sell anything to live, I’ve learned that mindful entrepreneurship can help push the needle forward by giving back. In a world that rewards the monetization of necessities, endless greed, and profit over people and place, I’m told it’s a little weird to take only what one truly needs and dedicate the rest to community and environmental aid. While it’s far from ideal to hang equity on the benevolence of business owners, that's the system we have right now, and I firmly believe we’d all benefit from more businesses of all sizes who embody a similar kind of ‘weird.’ I hope this rewritten measure of entrepreneurial success will someday become standard."

With love and appreciation from your unlikely soap-preneur,
Hayna

Dahlia and sunflower petals are skin safe and edib Dahlia and sunflower petals are skin safe and edible, and they dry into perfect sprinkles for cakes, winter cheese boards, and—Yay!—naturally colorful botanical body care. 💐

Soon, soon.

The season of fresh bouquets may be ending a bit earlier than expected here in NY, but there are rainbows everywhere if we look through the storm. 🌈💛✨

1. Dahlia and sunflower petals arranged from crimson to fuchsia to lemon, plucked and headed for the dehydrator.

2. Cosmos in the garden: Unlike our dyestock darling, C. sulphureus, the C. bipinnatus species is not edible, but 'Seashells' is lovely and fleeting with dark pink, white and blush tubular or rolled petals. She is an old friend; I saved and brought her seeds from our Connecticut gardens nine ?! years ago. Edited: Ten years! Time flies.
Happy Fall, y'all! Today's mist felt positively ma Happy Fall, y'all! Today's mist felt positively magical. 🍁 We gratefully collect loads of flowers, herbs and veggies every day, May through September. Sometimes it feels like the gardens might always be warm and fruitful. Every year, I'm amazed when the main harvest is nearly over as summer flies by.

The closure this time seems right for us, though. I have a few weeks of tough treatments coming up and we're wholeheartedly welcoming the cozy season of wool beanies, simmering soups, changing leaves and hoodies by a bonfire while it's still delicious and fun. Fall is so beautiful in the Finger Lakes and we feel incredibly fortunate to live here.🍇

Ooh, and shop talk: Lots-lots-lots of restocks including Thirsty Face serum, Fix It balm, Sweet Rice cleanser, Smoothie polish;

Calendula Chamomile salve, Arnica balm;

Flower City Lilac scrub, Naples Grape Seed scrub (with ground seeds from the one and only Jeni's Pies);

Pomelo & Sage, Unscented, Cedar & Citrus deodorants;

Ginship and Malt in Motion art soaps (made in partnership with @HollerhornDistilling); a few others. It's been a busy month-plus here. 🙌🏽

Hope you're all doing well. If you can, take a minute or ten to soak up the season outside. It's so, so good. 💛✨
